The term 'genealogy' is derived from the Greek 'genea', generation, and 'logos', knowledge. Genealogy is the study of families, and the tracing of their lineages and histories. Genealogists use oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about families. This information is very useful in determining kinship and pedigrees of family members. The Lillard Families, both African American and white, have long been very interested in genealogical research and the construction of their Lillard Family trees. Just checkout Ancestry.com, or go to the Internet and you'll find many examples of Lillard genealogies and family trees.
The LILLARD PROJECT/ African American Families is, truly, a work in progress. The goal of this project is to have each major branch of African American Families with the surname LILLARD compile a complete genealogy of its own branch. (The resources listed below, will, hopefully, be helpful in accomplishing this objective.)
One of the most invaluable resources for African American Families is the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Now, African American families with the surname Lillard, as well as others, are able to digitally connect with the NMAAHC, and preserve and share their family stories by uploading audio, video, photographs and other archives via the NMAAHC's Community Curation Program. (Btw, you can download the NMAAHC mobile app for iOS at Apple's App Store, and for Android at Google Play.)
The vision of the LILLARD PROJECT is to combine all the separate genealogies of the individual LILLARD branches into an overall genealogy of African American Families with the surname LILLARD, in order to tell the LILLARD FAMILY'S complete, all-inclusive, and very rich story, as well as, provide a framework and understanding of its origins, history, and major accomplishments. Yes, this really is a big vision, but I'm confident it can be realized through collaborative effort and partnership. Teamwork makes the dream work!
The privacy of personal information, particularly of living individuals, is of the utmost importance to this project. Emphasis is placed, primarily, on historical facts and information. Outstanding achievements of contemporary Afrcian American Lillards, appearing in sources freely available to the general public, such as newspapers, television, and the Internet, may, occasionally, be highlighted. All contributions to this project are totally voluntary.
An additional objective of the LILLARD PROJECT is to provide online and other resources helpful to individuals, genealogists, historians, and others seeking to discover and better understand the lineages and histories of African American families with the surname LILLARD.
African Americans, as well as all others with the surname LILLARD, genealogists, archivists, historians, and researchers are all cordially invited to participate in this project.
Much appreciation to my brothers: Horace R. Lillard, Rev. Dr. Calvin A. Lillard, and Carlton E. Lillard for helping to make this project possible. I, also, wish to thank Lillard Family Genealogist and Historian Ralph Emerson Lillard (1932-2015) and family, Ann Lillard Block (her father is a direct descendent of Thomas Lillard, b. 1570), Joan James, Twania Lillard, Erik Thorson, James Horace Lillard, Joyce Hogan, Antonio (of a very large family of Lillards originally from Oklahoma), Tanya Brown-Homes, and Micaela Lillard Browning (descendant of Walter Huston Lillard) for all their encouragement, contributions and support.
In addition, I wish to acknowledge the assistance and generosity of Marian Bailey Presswood, Polk County, TN, Historian, whose research and contributions helped to provide vital information and content to this site. Further, I wish to thank Ms. Miller of the Campbell County Historical Society, Campbell County, TN, who provided very valuable data and research which aided greatly in the advancement of this project. For anyone whose name I may have, inadvertently, left out, I sincerely apologize and thank you for your contribution.
(Any and all individuals who might provide relevant information regarding African American Lillard origins, genealogy, history, contributions, or achievements are cordially invited to contribute here.)
Today, the face of the African American LILLARD Family is undoubtedly it's most famous member, NBA Star, Damian Lillard!
